Apo Reef Experience

Apo Reef: Dive Spots

Explore some of the remarkable dive sites around Apo Reef, each offering unique marine life and underwater scenery.
There are 19 dive spots around Apo Reef, enough to enjoy diving for many days. We offer you a selection here. The dive spots we visit depend on several factors such as weather, high tide, low tide, and the training level of the divers. Not every dive site is suitable for all divers.
Ego Wall (Depth 5–40m)
Located at the north-west corner of Apo Island, this impressive dive site is known for sightings of big pelagics, schools of Midnight Snapper and Unicorn Fish. Giant Trevally can also be seen here in large numbers.
Mabuti Wall (Depth 6–35m)
Mabuti Wall is an excellent place to spot Black Tip Reef Sharks and Titan Triggerfish. Along the wall, you may also see large moray eels, and under some overhangs, even White Tip Sharks. Common reef fish here include Moorish Idols, Porcupine Fish, and Peacock Grouper.
Shark Airport (Depth 3–30m)
This dive site is famous for its White Tip Reef Sharks resting on the sand. On a good day, you may see a dozen sharks. Look into the deeper water for Eagle Rays, and along the reef edge you may find schools of Blue Striped Snappers and sometimes even mating pairs of cuttlefish.
Aladin (Depth 5–40m)
Another beautiful wall dive in the northern part of the reef around Apo Island. It is especially known for its unique light ambiance during late afternoon dives. Groups of Bumphead Parrotfish often visit the shallow areas of this site.
Shark Ridge (Depth 10–35m)
A spectacular outer reef dive site where the shallows begin at about 5m before the wall drops steeply into deeper water. Sand channels, coral outcroppings, and large gorgonian fans make this site especially scenic. Watch for Bridled Angelfish, Longnose Hawkfish, beautiful Staghorn coral gardens, schools of Damsel Fish, and frequent sightings of White Tip Sharks. Large schools of Jacks and Tuna may also pass in the open sea.
Apo 29 (Depth 30–40m)
Apo 29 is for advanced divers only. The top of the reef begins at nearly 30m, making it an excellent nitrox dive. Divers can expect encounters with a large school of Barracuda, and shark activity here can be very exciting. Careful attention to air consumption and decompression time is essential on this advanced dive.

TRAVEL GUIDE

TRAVELLING IN THE PHILIPPINES

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION AND HELPFUL TIPS FOR YOUR JOURNEY TO GUSTAV’S PLACE BEACH & DIVING RESORT.
Travel Information

Before You Leave

Important travel tips to help you prepare for your visit to the Philippines.
Travel Essentials
Some products can be difficult or even impossible to find in the Philippines. It is recommended to bring personal essentials from home.
Examples include tampons, quality sunglasses, shaving cream, aftershave, and certain medical products.
You should also bring a small travel medical kit including:
✦ Medicine for ear problems and seasickness
✦ Medication for stomach problems
✦ Charcoal tablets
✦ Disinfectant for minor injuries
✦ Bandages and basic first aid items
✦ Mosquito repellent sprays
✦ Creams for insect bites
✦ Sun protection cream
✦ Flashlight and good batteries

Entry & Visa

English is the second official language of the Philippines, so most people speak it very well, making travel communication easy for visitors.
To enter the Philippines, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
If you stay for up to 30 days, you will receive a tourist entry stamp and visa upon arrival.
This visa can be easily extended to 59 days. If you plan to stay longer, you must apply for an extension at a local immigration office.
Important: Always check the validity of your visa to avoid problems when leaving the country.

Money & Payments

Bring enough cash as well as your debit and credit cards.
While ATMs work well in Manila, withdrawing money can be difficult in the provinces.
It is recommended to carry some euros or US dollars for exchange if needed.
Warning: Never exchange money with people on the street offering better rates. This is a common scam and you will almost certainly be cheated.

Arriving in Manila

Metro Manila has almost 12 million inhabitants, making it a true mega city.
The city is served by Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), which has four terminals. Terminal 4 handles most domestic flights and is located in Pasay City.
Finding a taxi at the airport can sometimes be difficult. Different taxi companies also charge different prices.
A convenient option is to buy a taxi ticket from the airport taxi counter inside the arrivals hall after collecting your luggage.
You can also purchase a SIM card or exchange money inside the arrivals hall.
Another reliable option is to use the Grab App. Simply install the app, create an account, and request a ride through your smartphone with internet access.
Travel Information

Stay in Manila

Helpful tips for travelers spending time in Manila before or after visiting Gustav’s Place.
Most travelers spend as little time as possible in Manila, as the city has limited sightseeing opportunities compared to other destinations in the Philippines. However, it is sometimes necessary to stay overnight.
For your return journey, we strongly recommend arriving in Manila 1–2 days before your international flight, as domestic flights in the Philippines are often delayed or occasionally cancelled.
Where to Stay
If you only have a short stay in Manila, it is convenient to book a hotel or AirBnB near the airport.
If you prefer to explore the city, consider staying in the Ermita district, a relatively safe area where many tourists stay. Taxi travel to Ermita usually takes about 30–45 minutes, but during rush hour it may take up to 3 hours because of Manila’s heavy traffic.

Recommended Hotels

Cherry Blossoms Hotel ★★★
#550 Jorge Bocobo Extension next to Robinsons Ermita Mall, Ermita, Manila, Philippines
Approx. €35 per night. Often fully booked.
Bayview Park Hotel Manila ★★★
1118 Roxas Boulevard corner United Nations Avenue, Ermita, Manila
Rooms from around €55 per night. Available on Booking.com.
AirBnB Option
If you prefer AirBnB, choose accommodations either near the airport (make sure you know which terminal you depart from) or in the Ermita district.

Nightlife in Ermita

LA Cafe
1429 M.H. Del Pilar Street, Manila
A surviving venue from Ermita’s historic red-light district. After 10 PM the place becomes lively with live bands, tourists, and nightlife energy. Loud music and cheap beer – not for everyone, but interesting for newcomers.
G-Point
510 Padre Faura Street, Ermita, Manila
A popular hangout for expatriates and long-time visitors. Beer is cheaper than at LA Cafe and the atmosphere is more relaxed.
